Arthritis Osteoarthritis refers to abnormal changes in the joint.  These changes occur when cartilage is worn away causing joints to become swollen and painful. It can range from mild to severe and can affect all breeds of all ages however is usually seen in older patients. Symptoms can come on gradually or start suddenly and with the colder weather upon us symptoms may become more obvious. There is no cure for arthritis however there are things you can do to help manage your pets condition.

 

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR
  • Limping & stiffness especially when rising.
  • Decreased willingness to walk, play or jump.
  • Decreased interest with people or other animals.
  • Hesitant to walk up or down stairs.
  • Change in personality.
  • Excessive licking, chewing or grooming joints.

  • Reduce treats or change to low fat treats

  • Substitute for weight loss foods
  • Reduce exercise sessions
  • Avoid sporadic periods of exercise
  • Consider using ramps around the house
  • Consider hydrotherapy
  • Know their ideal weight and have regular weigh ins

CATS – HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • Make meals more accessible to reach
  • Reduce treats and feed smaller portions
  • Substitute for weight loss foods
  • Use a litter tray with a lower side
  • Assist with gentle grooming
  • Make areas more accessible
TREATMENT
